When we moved to Kentucky 3.5 years ago we were introduced to Declaration Dinners and they immediately became one of the highlites of the year. Essentially they are a gathering of 8 to 14 friends for a meal followed by a presentation of each individual's desires for the coming year. The Declarations are preceded by prayer and a search for the deepest desires of the heart.
Years ago we were trying to figure out if we should move from the Atlanta area to Asheville, NC. I had been on a short trip up there and fell in love. I spent close to six weeks asking the Lord if it was his will for us to go to Asheville and never heard a thing. One night after a ministry session, I sat down tired from the week's activities and the Lord interrupted me by asking, "What do you want?" I was stumped. What do you mean, what do I want? You're supposed to tell me if this is what you want. There was another brief exchange, then he asked again, "What do you want?" My response was, I'll get back to you on that.
The truth was that I really didn't know what I wanted. You see, knowing what you want brings order to everything. It determines what you'll work your butt off for, it decides what you will pray for, sacrifice for, prepare for, save for, it establishes all of priorities. Scripture says that a man plans his way, but the Lord orders his steps. Unless you have a fixed direction and the determination to get there the Lord can not alter either your path or your steps. This why Annual Declaration Dinners are so important. It build structure around a Godly process. We also see another validation in scripture, Habakkuk 2:2 says, "And the LORD answered me: "Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it."
The Dinner a special for several reasons; a) It's always good to be with friends, b) its always fun at a party, and c) sharing a meal with good friends is Holy to the Lord. The meal can be anything, it doesn't matter so long as it is festive, and that can either mean the food or the location. To understand Holy to the Lord, I need to give you some background.
When we come into this world we are bonded to our mothers through breast feeding, a process whereby a mother nourishes both the body and the spirit of her child. It is a Holy event and there are any of them. King David said that he "learned trust at his mother's breast." More intentional fruit of the bonding process pursued over a meal. Think of how many times in scripture Jesus and the disciples are pictured together sharing meal? It is the process God gave us to become bonded to one another so that we can experience the benefit of true community. The closer we get to one another the greater the need for, and our corresponding ability to open our hearts to one another, and one of those functions for us is to share our 2015 Declarations with those were have come to care about ... because it is Holy to the Lord.
